The Shield

Spring has sprung, and it's been quite crazy.  With book signings, work, visitors and my son's graduation from the University of Missouri, my mind has been running like mad.  Finally with time to spare, I enjoyed reading Councilman-at-Large Ralph McDaniel's Facebook post on "The Shield" this morning.  Are you familiar with "The Shield"?

If you've ever had a broken heart, I bet you are.

The shield refers to defense mechanisms that build up our emotional walls so thick that the sunlight can barely peek through. Believe me, I get it. It's the story that imprisons us; it's our penchant for telling that jacked up ...tale of 'what had happened' and every horrible detail of it over and over that strengthens depression and isolation. We think it and speak it again and again to answer why we don't do or won't do or can't do or didn't do something - and this kills the spirit. With every repeat, the negativity is more deeply imprinted to the identity of who we are, even to the molecular level.

Renewing the mind and reviving the heart means switching what we think, speak and do to a positive love-affirming focus so that we reflect dreams, not nightmares; an auspicious future, not a slighted past. Gotta shake the negative vibes and people by praying with your feet and renewing the mind with what you read, practice and listen to. It isn't easy, but with that prayerful mind/body/soul commitment - I live it and believe that we, and our ability to love can be fully revived again. [rke]
